SHRM-CP Certified!

A significant portion of the services I provide at Sunstone Business Services, which were also primary components of my previous jobs, are centered around Human Resources. Not everybody is meant to work in HR…some days not even me! It’s a constant balance of regulations, management, leadership, engagement, flexibility and firmness, strategy, interpersonal relationships, and the list goes on. To do it well, one must be constantly refreshing their knowledge.

In my MBA program, I had professors and specific HR-focused classes to help me expand my knowledge base. In my professional life, I have mentors, lawyers, and webinars. I also have the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). With hundreds of thousands of members in more than 150 countries, “SHRM is the foremost expert, convener and thought leader on issues impacting today’s evolving workplaces” (SHRM-About).

Years ago, I became a member and used SHRM to find best practices on policies, updates on HR laws, and templates for various documents I created. When I ventured out on my own, I realized I needed to go through the rigor of becoming one of their Certified Professionals.

I spent five months studying and taking practice tests as I prepared for my December 1 exam. I then sat down to their 3-hour proctored online test to answer questions about ethics, best practices, data analysis, strategic planning, leadership, business management, and more.

Luckily, it took them less time to tell me I’d passed than it took for me to take the exam! I’m now a SHRM Certified Professional. I have the knowledge to back up the skills I offer.
